Fenris & Mott and Climate Change

At our Comic-Con panel, the panelists concluded that science in middle grade fiction should inspire curiosity in the reader and that, while accuracy can be sacrificed for the sake of the story, there should be no lies about scientific facts.

The educators in the audience suggested that science resources be included in the back matter of middle grade science fiction books. What a great idea! I hope that publishers will consider doing that more often.

It got me thinking… maybe I could post some resources here for some kids’ books.

Fenris & Mott is a middle grade science fiction book by Greg van Eekhout, a fellow Comic-Con panelist and my husband. In the book, a young girl named Mott finds a puppy and promises to take care of him, not knowing he is actually Fenris, the wolf who will bring on Ragnarok in Norse mythology. This tale takes place in modern day Southern California, and without spoiling too much, one of the manifestations of the end of the world is climate change.

Climate Change Resources

To celebrate the paperback release of Fenris & Mott, I have gathered some links to useful climate change resources. These are the sources I go to when I look for designing curriculum for my college students. Some of these have materials for all ages, and others are specific to grade level. Hope you find them useful!
