Join me for The Sky Tonight

If you’re local to San Diego or you’ve been lucky enough to visit our fair city, you undoubtedly know about the Fleet Science Center in beautiful Balboa Park. They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year! It is a fantastic museum, with great educational programs, IMAX movies, and exhibits for all ages. And they run live planetarium shows every month in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater!

The Sky Tonight planetarium shows are held the first Wednesday night of every month. For almost eleven years, I’ve had the privilege of being the presenter. Every month we take a tour of the night sky, and then we focus on a specific topic. Black holes? Sure. Moons of the solar system? Galaxies? Those, too. This month’s show on June 7 is all about tidal forces in the cosmos. If you’re interested, you can get ticket info (the price also includes admission to the museum) here.

What will you see?

The wonderful folks from the San Diego Astronomy Association set up their telescopes (weather permitting), so you have a chance to do some astronomical observing after the shows. Under the dome, we never have to worry about the weather. I took these images of the dome from my iPhone, in case you’re wondering what you might see.

Still unsure? Here are some of the online shows we did during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. Imagine how much better they are with the beautiful sky displayed on a 76-foot wraparound screen above you!

Hopefully we’ll see you soon at The Sky Tonight.

Wishing you clear skies!
