Talking about Star Wars

This month, I was honored with the opportunity to give a “Science of Star Wars” presentation via Zoom to faculty, staff, and students at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Ciudad de México. The invitation came from comics creator Juanele, who also happens to be a physicist and faculty member there. We have been on panels at cons in San Diego together, and he thought our brand of science nerddom would appeal to the students at the beginning of their semester.

I absolutely love using pop culture to make science more accessible. Astronomy is a great way to teach physics, which so many people find scary. Including my students! But leading them from hyperspace and space travel to relativity and ion engines is much easier and fosters curiosity and fantastic questions. Truthfully, Star Wars was an important part of my scientific journey, and I know I’m not alone.
